About Storyplace

Storyplace makes accessible to everyone the stories that are important to regional NSW, and which are represented by the collections cared for by its museums, galleries and cultural centres.

There are over 500 museums, galleries and cultural centres in regional NSW. These organisations are spread across an area almost five times the size of England, which can make visiting them difficult.

There is nothing like seeing the ‘real thing’, but Storyplace will allow you to view many of the objects, records, community memorabilia, photographs, oral histories and artworks, located in regional NSW online – from anywhere and at any time. 

So, whether you’re a curious community member, a student at school or university, an educator or researcher, or a visitor to somewhere in NSW, Storyplace will have something that inspires you.

Storyplace highlights some of the most significant stories that relate to the culture and history of regional New South Wales, told through significant objects and artworks. This includes stories relating to landscapes, places, peoples and communities. And we havent forgotten to include stories about the non-human creatures we live with either.

Stories about Country and First Nations traditions, communities and experiences, are told through historic and contemporary objects and artworks. 

Stories about migrant-origin peoples reflect the traditions, ideas and influences of the many cultures from which non-Indigenous peoples descend, and have brought to New South Wales.

Also, expect to see old and new story perspectives at Storyplace.

Some of the stories on Storyplace will be familiar, because we have heard stories like these before. Some story angles will be new and expand our understanding. And some stories may challenge us to rethink how we see old stories. 

Storyplace stories are authored by dedicated storytellers, contracted to work with M&G NSW and regional museums, galleries and cultural centres.

Storyplace aims to bring diverse perspectives to regional stories and storytelling. Indeed, among the most important things about Storyplace is that it makes room for varied voices or points of view, along with varied ways of telling stories.

First Nations storytellers, as well as storytellers from migrant-origin backgrounds, have authored, and collaborated on, Storyplace stories. 

As we grow the number of stories that can be found at Storyplace, we will grow the perspectives and voices behind Storyplace stories.   

Ultimately, we aim include and share stories about everybody at Storyplace.

To date, only a small number of the over 500 museums, galleries and cultural centres located throughout NSW have their collection represented on Storyplace.

But, our aim is to continue to work with new regional organisations to bring many more stories to Storyplace.
