Maitland Gaol
Maitland Gaol is located in East Maitland, on Wonnarua Country, in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales.
Incorporating the intact, though decommissioned prison complex in its entirety, Maitland Gaol (which operated from 1848 to 1998) provides visitors with a variety of self guided, curator-led and educational experiences, focusing on its social, carceral and architectural history and the lives of its former inmates and workers.
Along with an extensive collection of prison artefacts and records are surviving buildings, interiors, facilities and features, including graffiti, signage, cells, mess areas, showers and exercise yards.
