Orange and District Historical Society

The Orange and District Historical Society is in the regional city of Orange, on Wiradjuri Country, in the Central West region of New South Wales.

The Society was formed in 1949 and collects objects, images and documents illustrating the history of the Central West. Its collections tell the stories of ordinary people who lived in the district, along with place-changing events such as the 1850s gold rush to nearby Ophir.

The Society’s collections also includes historical material relating to the district’s early Cornish settlers and settlement, as well as the story of the Australian bush poet Banjo Patterson. Recent additions to the collection include a vast archive of photographs taken by journalists working for the town’s newspaper, the Central Western Daily.
