Echoes of Elegance

The Narrabri Hospital Ball of 1914

Held on Tuesday 14 July 1914, Narrabri’s Hospital Ball brought together residents from throughout North West NSW, amidst the escalating tensions in Europe and increasing financial strain on the hospital.

Mrs. A. B. Bevan, the esteemed secretary of the Hospital Committee whose name is featured on this yellowed dance card, played a pivotal role in crafting the elegant evening. The town hall was transformed with floral garlands, fairy lanterns, lace napery, and white wall draperies adorned with the symbol of the Red Cross. Maiden-hair ferns were transported from Sydney to complement other well-thought-out decorations – no detail was overlooked.

On the night, the air was filled with the sweet winter smells of jonquils and camelias alongside the melodic sound of violins, cornets, and a piano. This program outlines the evening’s eighteen dances, including a supper break where guests enjoyed a lavish spread of poultry, beef, pork, salads, fruits, jellies, custards, and cakes. Served on an array of fine china and silverware on loan for the evening from local families, there were markers of community spirit in the smallest of details.

Narrabri’s neighbouring townships rallied in support, with guests travelling from Moree, Inverell, Tamworth, and Wee Waa. Each ticket purchased, ranging from 5 to 10 shillings, represented a small yet significant contribution to the evening’s goodwill and communal backing. Reports of the festivities echoed with praise for the graceful dancing, magnificent decorations, and the tireless efforts of volunteers, unanimously declaring the event a resounding success.
