Stories for Canowindra Historical Museum
Canowindra Historical Museum
Canowindra Historical Society and Museum is in the town of Canowindra, on Wiradjuri Country, in the Central West region of New South Wales.
Members of the Canowindra Historical Society (founded in 1967) operate this volunteer-run museum which is dedicated to collecting, preserving and displaying objects associated with the district’s history. Among its diverse collections are historic dresses, dentistry equipment and a first edition of Australian author Kylie Tennant’s Tiburon, a story based on the people and township of Canowindra, written during the time she lived there in the 1930s.
Horse drawn vehicles and historic farm implements and machinery reflect the importance of lucerne, wheat and wool to the district, while textiles, household memorabilia and an authentic slab hut illustrate the experiences of early settlers.
