Chifley Home and Education Centre
The Chifley Home and Education Centre is located in Bathurst, on Wiradjuri Country, in the Central West region of New South Wales.
As the private home of Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley and his wife Elizabeth from 1914 to the late 1940s, this house museum offers a vivid glimpse of the couple’s domestic life during the Great Depression and war-time years.
Sitting on a quiet suburban street in an old working class neighbourhood of Bathurst, the Chifley’s former home features original household furnishings, kitchenware, personal belongings and an assortment of ceremonial gifts presented to Chifley during his political career. Education programs and public events bring this home to life and illuminate this dramatic period of austerity, war and upheaval. The building, together with its collection, was bequeathed to the Presbyterian Church until it was sold in 1972 to Bathurst City Council.
